Got
a room full of farm toys and models but nothing better than a box to put them
in? If so, there's a good chance that Brushwood Toys may have the answer. The
company, from Exmoor in Devon, makes a range of authentic modern farm buildings
aimed at both the child and collector market. Brushwood Toys specialise
in the design and manufacture of high quality and authentic 1/32-scale toy farm
buildings. The business, which is owned by Paul Headon, a farmer's son from Exmoor
in Devon, has been around in one form or another since the mid-1990s, but can,
through its founder's interest in farm toys, trace its origins back much further.
Paul first became interested in toy farm buildings in the 1970s and early
1980s when, as a child growing up on his father's dairy farm in Devon, he could
never understand why there were so few decent toy buildings on the market. Britains,
to their credit, made a pretty good Atcost general purpose building, but it was
too small and susceptible to damage in the hands of young children. Everything
else tended to be home-made and crudely constructed. When the time eventually
came to find a job in the real world, Paul was realistic enough to know that there
was never going to be a full-time living for him on his father's 65-acre dairy
farm, so he decided to pursue a career in law. It seemed like a good idea at the
time, but, after qualifying from Guilford Law School in 1992, he came to the conclusion
that he hated his new profession! So, in 1994, Paul turned his back on
law and returned to his first love - farming and farm toys. Recalling the dearth
of toy farm buildings from his childhood, he resolved to do something about it
by forming his own company, Upton Toys, in 1994. Upton Toys' first releases
were, not surprisingly, heavily influenced by Paul's upbringing on the farm and
consisted of a herringbone milking parlour, a cubicle shed and a silage clamp
- buildings that, had they been for real, would have transformed his father's
small dairy farm into a viable unit. Upton Toys traded happily for two
years as a small mail order business attending agricultural events and shows all
over the UK. During this time the range was extended to include beef units, general
purpose buildings, workshops and simple lean-tos. In 1997, Paul was approached
by an Exeter-based agricultural subsidiary of Wolseley PLC, who invited him to
join them in setting up a new wooden toy division specialising in farm and equestrian
related products. It was called 'The Wolseley Toy Company' and its products
were sold primarily through agricultural dealers and farming cooperatives throughout
the UK. However, after three years, Paul began to become frustrated with the compromises
that were being made in quality and attention to detail, so, in 2000, he left
to start his own toy company - Brushwood Toys. The new company's initial
releases, namely a new milking parlour, cubicle shed and three-bay multi-purpose
building with silage clamp, were well-received and went on to form the basis of
a very successful range. They have recently been supplemented by a three-bay tractor
and implement shed, a straw barn and a lambing shed. Unlike many of their
contemporaries, Brushwood buildings are built to withstand a fair bit of rough
and tumble, and, when the day's play is over, they can be flat-packed away under
the sofa or bed. Despite this, they have a very high level of detail and certainly
don't look out of place in a farm model diorama or display. The range is
set to grow in 2007 with the introduction of three new farm buildings, bringing
the total number to nine. Prototype work on a large grain store with round bins,
a machinery workshop and a slurry lagoon, together with a host of accessories
is well underway. There will also be some electronic gadgetry but that's being
kept under wraps for now to keep the customers guessing! All the toys are
made in Devon and are of solid wooden construction. Everything is done in-house
- from the initial design & CNC cutting to hand silk screen printing, stainless
steel fabrication of internal parts, component assemblies, packing and boxing.
All the models come flat packed, and are CE marked. Paul's aim has always
been to bring an element of realism back to the traditional farm yard, and to
replace those much-loved but rather tatty buildings that were perhaps inherited
from older siblings and cousins with up-to-date buildings that are more in keeping
with modern farming.
